A typical error is only measuring the length and width of the room and omitting doors, windows, closets, etc. Another is not keeping in mind the size of furniture, such as armrests, extended legs or handles. To understand how to measure a room for furniture, measure all the walls that are involved and note down the usable floor area. Be sure to test all doors, drawers and recliners for extension and/or opening without striking adjacent items. Don’t use your memory – record the measurements and clearly mark each wall. A common mistake is failing to consider access at the time of delivery, such as narrow hallways, staircases and elevators. Another mistake is not making a consistent conversion of units, leading to false results. If purchasing, make sure to compare the dimensions of the product with their floor plan and give yourself space for movement. If it appears too big on the paper, outline it with painter’s tape on the floor. Taking measurements twice can save money, cut down returns and make the room you create a more comfortable space.
