GuestWearing a good wetsuit can also help you be more streamlined in the water. For weak swimmers, or if you are physically tired a wetsuit can help you stay afloat a little bit easier. Of course it doesn’t compensate for a safety vest and depends on the thickness of the kids wetsuit size. A thicker wetsuit may be warmer and buoyant, but it can hinder your movement for swimming.
It may be worth spending a little more money on some products if you can establish a relationship with the owners or managers of the local surf shop. If you establish a good relationship they will steer you towards the best products and away from the worst. They can also help you make decisions on the best surfboards, wax, etc.
Purchasing a used wetsuit is another way to obtain a wetsuit at a great price. Just because a wetsuit is used, don’t automatically assume that it’s out of style or in bad condition. There are many people who purchase wetsuits and then only use them a few times before giving up on the scuba diving sport. These wetsuits are still in like-new condition and you can find many of them for sale on eBay and other online venues.
Learning to surf is no different than learning anything else in life. If you know and understand the fundamental basics first, there’s a logical progression that ultimately shortens the time it takes to learn that skill. Watching new surfers with super short boards, trying to paddle around and into the breaking waves take months to sometimes do what you can do in one day by following these simple steps.
After you know where you are, begin to assess options for moving forward. Focus only on solutions. After you survey your situation, it’s time to make way for positive solutions and options. Ask questions like: “What can I gain?” or “What contacts can I make?” Maintain a positive outlook regardless of the situation — even if you do not immediately see the opportunity. Stay focused on the outcome you want and where you want to go.
If you cannot swim out to the breaking waves and swim back to shore without a surfboard then do not get in the water. Years ago all surfers had great surfing fitness and could swim very well. Today there are many people who enter the ocean who have no idea about swimming or even basic surf fitness. An old unwritten surf law states that you should learn to swim before you learn to surf.
As you surf life’s waves, you will see good waves and bad ones. You will have some awesome rides and some gnarly wipe outs. You will meet fellow surfers who want to help you out and those who would rather beat you down. There will be sunny days to enjoy the beach. There will also be storms that take away your enjoyment and opportunity as the sea becomes unstable and unsuitable for your purposes. Injustice, rude people, hardships, difficulties and even some bad things will happen in your life. We cannot control those. The only thing we can control is our attitude and the actions we choose to take in response.
